Fun Tips for Artists

Fresh tips for boosting your creativity: Bambootiger (author of Connect the Dot Face) shows us that, as an artist, sometimes you have to have fun!

Bambootiger says: "This isn't anything serious, but something I did for a little fun. I taught myself to write left-handed so I can make notes at meetings and just draw something I make up with my right hand. I didn't try to do realistic proportions on this one: It's kind of more like a doll."

As you can see, the face that resulted is different from the one we worked with in his series "Connect the Dot Face", but is still very beautiful.

This example by Bambootiger reminds even us serious artists that it is important to have fun with your art and to try new things. Have you ever tried something off-the-wall to create new forms of art? Here are some ideas for you to try:

  • Take a tip from our featured artist and switch hands.

  • Forget about all your "professional" art equipment and try drawing with crayons or painting with kitchen spatulas.

  • Experiment with "drawing" with paint. Dip a pencil in paint and run it over your paper.

  • Think you have to use pencils or pens to draw? Think about trying out a Sharpie. It comes in regular, fine, extra fine, and many different colors.

  • Ever think about using masking tape in your art? Next time you paint or draw cover every other inch or two of paper or canvas with a strip of tape. When you are done, peel off the tape and take a look at the interesting result.

  • Attempt not to use a paintbrush when you paint. Instead, use plastic wrap, clumps of paper, feathers, and other found objects.
