A while back I learned about a great two-week art camp for Native American children of 14-18 years of age held by the San Juan College Fine Arts Center. Students at the Navajo Art Camp learn the hands-on art of their ancestors, such as rug weaving, and how to have a career in art. They meet real artists, visit galleries, studios, and museums, and have their own show at closing of camp.
The camp
Recently, they lost some of their much needed funding for the program. They are not looking for donations of money, though. What they need is art supplies! If you know of any place that the program can find reduced price art supplies, please contact me or Cindy McNealy, Coordinator of Educational Outreach in Art.
I think it is important that we support arts for children! More and more art programs for children are being shut down or reduced to save money. Don't let this happen. Art programs keep children off the streets, gives them self confidence, and teach them patience, as well as a multitude of other things..
