I don't know whether it's the same for drawing as for writing, but when I'm trying to compose a piece of journalism, I try to give myself a few days to let it roll around in my head. If I do, I'm almost certain to see a news item or read a book or hear some conversation that helps me develop the composition into a story with some texture instread of just writing a dull, bare-bones report.

I think it is the same for a lot of artists. I know that a painting can be in my head, growing, for a long time. It helps to let your subconscious to work on things, I think.
